For many years we have been using the fluid head FSB 8 from Sachtler on our Gitzo tripod. There are many good tripod heads, but for focal lengths over 600 mm, with the Extender 1.4x and 2x, the FSB 8 is simply perfect. It is fast to use, even for birds in flight, and can eliminate vibrations caused by long focal lengths or the mirror impact of the camera. That is why we use this fluid head. The system with the sideload plate from Sachtler also works very well, until you start using more than one telephoto lens with the Sachtler FSB 8. If you don’t want to change the sideload plate every time, only more sideload plates will help. This is not inexpensive and annoying. For our work we also use a NSN Skimmer II, so we need an Arca-Swiss conversion to improve compatibility.
All conversions that can be found in the web are mostly based on plates from different companies, which are screwed onto the lens base and the Sachtler. Such a combination was out of the question for us.
After a long search on the internet, we finally found a nature photographer from Austria, who was involved with the conversion and designed an Arca-Swiss plate for the FSB 6 and FSB 8. After a short contact we had our new Arca-Swiss compatible plate here and could install it on our Sachtler FSB 8.
The result is really great. Now the FSB 8 works perfectly in the Arca-Swiss system. On our telephoto lenses we replaced the original lens feet with lens feet from Wimberley and everything fits together perfectly. Now we are just waiting for the Wimberly AP-600 to be available for our new Canon EF 600mm f/4 L IS III USM.
